Steven M. Colloton of Des Moines, Iowa, was appointed a United States Circuit Judge for the Eighth Circuit by President George W. Bush in 2003. He became chief judge of the circuit in March 2024. In addition to his work on the court of appeals, Judge Colloton has served as chair of the Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Appellate Rules and as a member of the Advisory Committee on Civil Rules and the Committee on the Judicial Branch. Born and raised in Iowa City, Judge Colloton graduated from Princeton University and Yale Law School. He served as United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa from 2001 to 2003, and previously worked in private law practice in Des Moines, as a federal prosecutor in Northern Iowa, as an associate counsel with the Office of Independent Counsel Ken Starr, as an attorney with the Office of Legal Counsel at the United States Department of Justice, and as a judicial law clerk to Judge Laurence Silberman and to Chief Justice William Rehnquist.
