Michael Flaum, MD is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa. He currently serves as the Consulting Medical Professional for the Eighth Circuit. His primary interests have been in community psychiatry, with a focus on enhancing access to behavioral health and crisis services, and the interface between mental health, criminal justice, and homelessness / housing systems. He is the immediate past president of the American Association for Community Psychiatry, and currently chairs the Community Psychiatry committee for the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry. He is also a longstanding member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, which has led to an interest over the last several years in the issue of burnout and wellness among those who do “people work”. Relevant to his work as the Consulting Medical Professional for the Eight Circuit, he previously chaired Iowa’s Physician Health Program.
