Judge Grasz is a native of Chappell, Nebraska. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and his law degree with honors from the University of Nebraska College of Law, where he was inducted into the Order of the Coif, and served as executive editor of the Nebraska Law Review. While in law school, he was also a member of two champion moot court teams and received the Roscoe Pound Award for Oral Advocacy.
Judge Grasz began his legal career in the litigation section at Kutak Rock, a national firm based in Omaha. He was later appointed Chief Deputy Attorney General for the State of Nebraska. Working in the state capitol, he managed the Civil Division of the Nebraska Department of Justice for nearly twelve years and was named Manager of the Year by the Nebraska State Government Chapter of the National Management Association. While Chief Deputy, he authored more than eighty published Attorney General Opinions. He also briefed and argued numerous high-profile appeals in the Nebraska Supreme Court and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and authored nine briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court where he served as counsel of record in one case and was at counsel table for three arguments.
In 2002 he joined Husch Blackwell’s Omaha office, where he focused on business litigation and appellate litigation. From 2012 until his appointment to the bench in 2018 he was listed in Best Lawyers in America for Appellate Practice. In addition to his practice, he has served on the Executive Committee of the Appellate Practice Section of the Nebraska State Bar Association, including a term as the co-chair. He currently serves on the Judicial Education Advisory Board for the Law and Economics Center at Antonin Scalia Law School. Judge Grasz is a Fellow of the Nebraska State Bar Foundation and has authored four law review articles and one book. As circuit judge, he has authored more than 600 opinions. Judge Grasz is the seventh Nebraskan to ever serve on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
