Michael Flaum, MD is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa. His primary interests have been in community psychiatry, with a focus on enhancing access to high quality services and supports for those with serious mental illnesses. He is the immediate past president of the American Association for Community Psychiatry, and currently chairs the Community committee for the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry. His work in systems of care has focused on the interface between mental health and the criminal justice and homelessness / housing systems. He is a longstanding member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, which has led to an interest over the last several years in the issue of burnout and wellness among those who do “people work”. Relevant to his work with the Eight Circuit, he previously chaired Iowa’s Physician Health Program.
